Football Federation Australia (FFA) revealed on Thursday the Asian Football Confederation had imposed a fine on the Australian team for their part in a mass brawl against China.

The Young Matildas women's soccer team were fined 4,760 Australian dollars (4,000 U.S. dollars) for their involvement in the incident.

"We are waiting till the team and coaches and the team management get back and we can assess the circumstances of what happened," FFA head of corporate and public affairs Bonita Mersiades Mersiades said.

China scored a 2-1 win in a group B matched at Hankou Sport Culture Stadium last Monday.

The brawl erupted after the final whistle, shortly after Australian defender Jessica Seaman was sent off on the stroke of full time.

An Australian player fell to the ground as the players were leaving the pitch and Young Matildas captain Tameka Butt reportedly sprinted across the field and confronted Chinese players before the incident escalated into a brawl.

The Australians were subsequently pelted with water bottles as they left the field.

The Young Matildas failed to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament despite finishing their group phase with an emphatic 4-0 win over Taiwan.

Their failure to advance to the last four also eliminated Australia from next year's under 20 women's World Cup.
